Overview
1.1 Rationale
In view of the importance of Swahili as Kenya’s official and national language M.A degree Programme in Kiswahili is vital because it is designed to train candidates that will be able to teach this subject at all levels including the university and teacher training Colleges. The course aims as enabling learners to master aspects of linguistics and literature in greater depth. Areas of
interface that contribute to general understanding of the main domains in linguistics and literature will be explored as well. The programme will also enable the learner to explore theory and its development and attempt its application while also endeavouring to make its critical evaluation vis-à-vis Kiswahili data. That way the learners will be more grounded in theory in terms of knowledge and application as they prepare to undertake research in various aspects of
language including lexicography, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and dialectology.
1.2 Programme Philosophy
The M.A Programme in Kiswahili is meant to enable students to understand and interrogate fundamental issues of Kiswahili literature and linguistics with respect to various theoretical perspectives. The programme also seeks to enable the candidates to apply various theoretic perspectives, rules and procedure to Kiswahili data and unravel any deficiencies thereof in regard to its application to Kiswahili language. This programme also nurtures Kiswahili students at master level and sharpens their critical skills and ability for academic expression. It provides an opportunity for mentorship as answers are sought for certain difficult questions and attempts made to seek answers to address them.
